Eczema Salve

Chickweed is always dried before being used to make an oil infusion because, due to their water content, green herbs can cause infused oil to grow bacteria or spoil. To create the oil infusion needed for this recipe, follow one of the two recipes for Horse Chestnut–Infused Oil for Wrinkles (see page 4).

3 ounces Chickweed-Infused Oil (see page 10)

1 ounce beeswax*

1 ounce lanolin**

*When working with beeswax, it is important to remember that even small amounts never completely come off pans. For this reason, use a pan that will be dedicated to making only beeswax products, or use a clean pan from a thrift store.

**Lanolin is a natural emollient produced by sheep on their wool. Some lanolin products that are labeled “pure” may have ingredients added. Check the label, and if there are extra ingredients, consider purchasing different lanolin.

Tip: Some beeswax can be bought in pellets instead of chunks, which is easier to measure.

Caution: Many times, commercially processed and pelleted beeswax can have a smoky smell, which means that it was processed at too high a heat and the wax has been damaged. Do not buy beeswax with a smoky smell, and do not use damaged beeswax in homemade beauty products.

1 Combine all ingredients in a quart glass mason jar.

2 Put the mason jar in a saucepan. Fill the pan halfway with tap water. To protect the glass jar from the direct heat at the bottom of the pan, put an upturned quart jar lid at the bottom of the pan between the pan and the jar. Simmer the jar until the beeswax is completely melted.

3 Remove from heat. Whisk until creamy and ingredients are completely incorporated. Let cool until the salve can be handled.

4 Using a spatula, move the eczema salve to a clean jar or storage container with a lid. Use within 60 days.
